Mining and Processing Methods

What options are being investigated?

Drilling is still being undertaken to determine the extent of the ore body. This will allow a decision to be made about the future mining method, being either open pit or continued underground mining.

The EIS is assessing design models for the overburden stockpile if an open pit is developed.

Mining operations also result in some waste solids and liquids, called “tailings”. The tailings are currently contained in a tailings management systems that allow evaporation of excess liquids.

The EIS will assess how an additional tailings system would be built and managed in future to minimise the impact on the environment.

What is the currently preferred mining and processing option?

The study is focusing on an open pit, with the existing underground operation to continue for some time.

To support the increased tonnage of ore mined, the current processing plant would need to be expanded with a similar processing and smelting method as the current operation.
